Wax crayons can help preschoolers develop their writing and drawing skills. They teach pre-writing skills as they help develop grip.

Uses:

  • Shading technique

Shading is achieved by working from lighter to darker colour tones. Coloured areas are created by drawing lines very close together, or lines drawn one on top of the other. You should start with very mild pressure and increase the pressure on each layer to achieve a stronger tone.

  • Crosshatching technique

Different colour values and nuances are achieved by drawing lines, one on top of the other, in a crisscross pattern. The crosshatching pattern should be thicker where darker shades are required.

  • Wax sgraffito

You work on top of a motif drawn in light colours using the shading technique, or over a layer of different coloured lines drawn in wax crayon. Then, cover the entire drawing with a layer of dark-coloured wax crayon. With a burin or pointed modelling tool, scratch away lines to reveal the hidden colours underneath.

  • Soap sgraffito

This process is exactly the same as the wax sgraffito technique, except that instead of covering the base layer of colours with wax crayon you use a mixture of liquid tempera and liquid soap (approximately three parts tempera to one part soap). When the tempera has dried, scratch the designs you want in order to reveal the layer of colours underneath.

  • Shavings

The shavings left over from sharpening Jovi Wax Crayons can be sorted into colours and used to make mosaic-type compositions. Spread PVA glue over the area of the drawing to be “coloured in” and sprinkle the shavings of the chosen colour on top of it. Once the glue has dried, shake off any loose pieces of wax.
